At SPS in Nuremberg (November 24–26, 2026), the Fraunhofer Institute for Cognitive Systems IKS will present methods and solutions for using AI language models to program control applications for production safely and reliably. In addition, the researchers will show a person recognition application for more flexible robotics applications in production (Hall 6, Booth 240).

The new building of the Fraunhofer Institute for Cognitive Systems IKS at the Garching Research Campus near Munich was officially opened yesterday, with senior government officials and leading figures from the research community in attendance. Fraunhofer IKS focuses on reliable, intelligent software systems that provide the foundation for creating value with artificial intelligence.

Kickoff for EuroQSS: The European research and innovation project aims to develop an open, interoperable quantum software stack, balancing hardware specifics with abstraction. This infrastructure is intended to support hybrid workflows across different quantum computers and classical high-performance computing systems. Thirteen European partners from industry and academia are participating in EuroQSS; the project will run from October 2026 through the end of September 2029.

The 41st international SafeComp conference (Safety, Reliability and Security of Computer-based Systems), which drew to an end in Munich on September 9, gave 156 experts from 18 countries an opportunity to focus intensively on is-sues regarding the safety and reliability of computer-based systems. Next year, SafeComp will take place in Toulouse.

In the future, quantum computers will be able to solve highly complex tasks that traditional computers have failed to do so far. In the QuaST project, which is funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action, seven partners from science and industry are researching how to make quantum computing as easily accessible as possible for small and large companies. The aim is to provide end users with a toolbox that they can use in different situations, for example to optimize production processes, for business forecasting and also to significantly increase efficiency.

The 41st International Conference on Computer Safety, Reliability and Security, SafeComp, will take place next year in Munich. For its 2022 edition, the annual event has the motto »New frontiers of safety assurance«.

The development of quantum computers is proceeding at a rapid pace. To utilize the potential of quantum computing for industry, the Bavarian Competence Center for Quantum Security and Data Science BayQS is researching the relevant issues to create the foundations for practical, trustworthy use. At the virtual kickoff event, Roland Weigert, Bavarian State Secretary for the Economy, emphasized the future importance of this topic for the Bavarian economy. The State of Bavaria is supporting the project with a total of 17 million euros over five years.

Roland Weigert, Bavarian State Secretary for the Economy, presented a grant notice in the amount of 20.1 million euros to the Institute Director, Professor Mario Trapp, for the Fraunhofer Institute for Cognitive Systems IKS.

A ceremonial event will be held on the evening of December 3 to open the new Fraunhofer Institute for Cognitive Systems IKS in Munich. Its research will focus on safety aspects of artificial intelligence: safe intelligence. The two areas of safety and intelligence are normally regarded separately but will now be combined. Fraunhofer IKS will be a central component of the State of Bavaria’s »Artificial Machine Intelligence« competence network. Six new professorships are being created for the institute’s work, including four at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). Guests of honor at the opening ceremony on the evening of December 3 will include Dr. Markus Söder, Minister-President of the State of Bavaria; State Secretary Hubert Aiwanger; Prof. Reimund Neugebauer, President of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft and Prof. Thomas F. Hofmann, President of TU Munich.
