Research programs at Fraunhofer IKS

Cognitive systems are the foundation of future technologies such as autonomous driving and Industry 4.0. Before visions such as road-worthy  self-driving vehicles can be become a reality, and to ensure the creation of market-ready products, the quality of such systems, based on  artificial intelligence (AI) and adaptive technologies for instance, must be verified and guaranteed.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Cognitive Systems IKS bundles its expertise into three research programs in order to address these complex challenges. Within these programs, the institute develops innovative solutions that offer significant value-add to society through extensive testing and analyses.

By carrying out extensive and systematic testing and analyses, the institute develops innovative solutions within these programs that offer significant value-add to society.

Trustworthy AI

AI-based systems must be trustworthy to be used in safety-critical areas. This is where Fraunhofer IKS research comes in, developing methods to make AI safer and more understandable.

Safety Assurance

Fraunhofer IKS is researching the requirements that an AI must fulfill in order to be safe enough. We are also working on safety cases to prove the safety of the overall system.

Resilient Software

Resilient software systems must be controllable and adaptable. Fraunhofer IKS develops solutions that ensure the usability and safety of cyber-physical systems even in dynamic environments.
